If you’ve searched for a hair porosity test, you’ve probably been told to drop a strand into a glass of water. It sounds simple, until your hair floats one day, sinks another, or gives you a result that doesn’t match how it behaves.
Understanding your porosity can help you make more informed haircare choices, but the float test cannot tell you the whole story. We’ll explain the limits of home tests and the clues to observe during wash day. Then we’ll connect those observations to your Type 4 routine.
What Is Hair Porosity?
Hair porosity describes how readily water moves into and out of the hair. The cuticle’s structure and condition influence this behaviour. Hair porosity is usually described in three broad categories:
- High porosity: Water enters and leaves the hair readily. This can contribute to dryness, roughness and frizz, particularly when the hair is damaged.
- Medium porosity: Water enters and leaves the hair at a relatively balanced rate
- Low porosity: Water takes longer to wet the hair fully. Once the hair is saturated, it can also take longer to dry.

How to Determine Hair Porosity at Home
The most useful way to assess your hair porosity at home is to observe how clean hair responds to water, products and drying. Compare several sections over a few wash days and look for a consistent pattern. No single home test gives a definitive result, so consider all your observations together.
1. Observe Wetting During Washing or With a Spray Bottle
During washing, work in manageable sections and notice how readily your hair becomes saturated. Alternatively, lightly mist a clean, dry section with water and observe whether droplets remain on the surface.
Persistent resistance to wetting can suggest lower porosity. Rapid wetting can be consistent with higher porosity, particularly in treated lengths. Neither observation confirms a category. Residue, section size, and the amount of water used affect both methods.
2. Compare Your Roots, Lengths, and Ends
Your hair may not have one porosity level from root to tip. Newer growth is usually less weathered, while the ends have experienced more washing, sunlight, heat, manipulation, and chemical treatment.
Assess several sections, including the crown, sides, nape, and ends. If your roots resist wetting while your ends wet readily, assess their care needs separately. This is common and does not mean you need a completely separate routine for every section.
3. Notice How Long Your Hair Takes to Dry
Notice how long your hair takes to dry, but do not use drying time alone to identify porosity. Density, length, styling, products, airflow, and humidity all affect it. Compare similar wash days rather than comparing your hair with someone else’s.
4. Observe Product Behaviour
If products leave your hair heavy or coated, review product quantity, formulation, layering, and cleansing. A coated feeling does not confirm low porosity. Notice whether your usual products improve softness and detangling or leave unwanted residue. A product disappearing from view does not prove that your hair has absorbed it.

Why the Float Test Can Give Misleading Results
For years, the float test has been one of the most popular ways to check hair porosity. The usual interpretation is simple: hair that floats is considered low porosity, hair that stays in the middle is considered medium porosity, and hair that sinks quickly is considered high porosity.
The problem is that the test shows how a strand behaves in water. It does not directly measure how porous the hair is. A single strand is very light, so surface tension can keep it on the surface before it becomes fully wet. Research found that humidity and bleaching affected hair’s surface properties.1
Product residue can also affect the result. Oils, conditioner, gel, and styling products may leave a film around the strand, changing how it interacts with water. If your hair feels coated or has recently been layered with products, the result may reflect buildup rather than your underlying hair behaviour.
One strand cannot represent every section of your head. Roots, lengths, and ends can differ in condition and treatment history. Spray tests, strand feel tests, drying time, and online quizzes can provide additional clues, but none should be treated as a definitive diagnosis.

What Your Findings Mean for Your Type 4 Routine
Use your observations to choose one practical change in your Type 4 routine.
1. If your hair resists wetting or feels coated: Review your cleansing routine, sectioning, product quantity, and layering before adding more products. Water resistance can also be caused by product residue, oils, or mineral deposits, so do not assume that every coated feeling is proof of low porosity.

3. Adjust for strand thickness and change one thing at a time: Porosity is only one part of the picture. You can have fine, medium, or coarse strands at any porosity level. Strand thickness affects how much product your hair can comfortably handle. Fine strands can feel weighed down by rich creams, even when the ends need conditioning. Coarser strands may respond well to a richer conditioner or sealant.
